Gdovic Sweeps Podiums at Watkins Glen
Hot on the heels of a podium finish at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Brandon Gdovic ventured north to Watkins Glen International for the next stop on his way to the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North American Championship. A malfunctioning transponder forced Gdovic to start from the back in the weekend’s two races but he overcame the challenge, sweeping the podiums by finishing second in both races.
The weekend started out strong for Gdovic and the DAC Motorsport team after the 24-year-old drove his ComServe Wireless Lamborghini Huracan to fourth-fastest overall and third-fastest ProAm in practice. The speed carried over into qualifying as Gdovic was laying laps fast enough for the third position overall. Unfortunately, his transponder malfunctioned keeping IMSA officials from being able to certify his lap times. Gdovic brought his car to the attention of the tech officials, but their call was to force Gdovic to start from the rear of the field for both races, per the rule book.
As Race 1 got underway, Gdovic wasted no time passing competitors on his trek to the front. Within a few short laps of the 50-minute race, he had moved into the fourth position in ProAm, ninth overall. Hoping to capitalize on a clear racetrack, Gdovic took his mandatory pit stop early. This strategy proved advantageous for him as he began to close the gap on the leaders. With 20 minutes remaining in Race 1, Gdovic moved into the third position and in a thrilling last-lap pass, Gdovic secured the second-position finish.
Gdovic began Race 2 confident he could repeat Friday’s performance. He started the race strong, passing an incredible eight Super Trofeo competitors on Lap 1. As mandatory green flag pit stops began, Gdovic played the same strategy as in Race 1, pitting first of the field. By midrace, he was already in third position ProAm and eighth overall. With ten minutes remaining, Gdovic made the pass for second-position, a spot he defended until the checkered flag flew thus securing his spot on the podium for a second consecutive race. This weekend’s sweeps move Gdovic into second position in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship.
Brandon Gdovic Quotes:
“I am pleased with the results this weekend at The Glen. Unfortunately, I had to start last for both races due to a faulty transponder which hindered me from getting a shot at racing with the leaders. With both races going caution free, I didn’t get the opportunity to make up the ground. But I had fun coming through the pack and am ready to head to Road America.”
