Brandon Gdovic Finishes Debut with Sweet Taste of Champagne
Yorktown, VA/May 7, 2015 – How a racing driver deals with the adversity that is around each corner of the race track, much less over the course of a racing weekend or season, largely determines how his stay in the sport will go. For Brandon Gdovic, this past weekends’ debut in the 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series opening two rounds at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was a true test of the young driver as he dealt with the highs and lows the sport has to offer in stride.
The weekend started with the promoter test, getting his first laps at the famed circuit with strong results last Thursday. Followed on Friday with two strong practice sessions where Brandon would finish with the third and fifth fastest times respectfully. Saturday would come the highly anticipated two stage qualifying session, followed closely with the first race of the season for both the series and Gdovic. Unfortunately a fuel pump problem developed as the car readied for qualifying, leading the Mitchum Motorsports team and factory Lamborghini technicians to dismantle Brandon’s No. 46 American Messaging Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 to rectify the issue. As a result Brandon missed both qualifying and Round 1 for a disappointing day after such strong results in the first two days at the track, and watched as his Mitchum Motorsports teammates swept the podium with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in Round 1.
The team would rebound and have his Lamborghini ready to go for Round 2 on Sunday, and Brandon was up to the task. Having to start at the back of the field due to missing qualifying meant that Gdovic would have to drive through the field to get to the front and gain much needed points for the weekend. Brandon would have a great race start, and would be hot on the tail of the fourth place car by the end of the second lap. He would pick up first in the AM class and third place overall shortly thereafter using traffic to his advantage to make the final pass.
After the pit stop the order would remain the same and Brandon would take the checker flag in 3rd place overall in Gallardo, and 1st in the AM class, giving him his first win of the season in what looks to be a bright season for the Yorktown, VA native. After spraying champagne that comes with a long anticipated and much deserved win, Gdovic had a sigh of relief and smile on his face. Gdovic’s efforts assisted greatly as the Mitchum Motorsports team heads into the next round of the series with the Team Championship points lead as they look to defend their 2014 title.
“Although I did not get to be in the first race it was a good weekend. I learned a lot and gained valuable experience about the Gallardo and the race procedures.” Gdovic continues, “Having to start last for the second race due to the fuel pump failure in qualifying, my goal was to win my class and to make it onto the podium for overall. I did exactly that and it eased the disappointment of missing the first race. I’m looking forward to Watkins Glen after getting some experience this past weekend and excited to see what I will be able to do there.”
Rounds three and four of the 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America series for the No. 46 American Messaging Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 will take place at Watkins Glen International Raceway on the weekend of June 24-26.
