Gdovic Earns XFINITY Career-Best Oval Finish at Bristol Motor Speedway
The Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 weekend started on a high note as Precision Performance Motorsports (PPM) and Brandon Gdovic welcomed PITT OHIO on board the No. 46 Chevrolet Camaro. Expectations were high for Gdovic’s eagerly anticipated return to the NASCAR XFINITY Series and he delivered, finishing the 200-lap event in the 18th position and earning his best oval-track finish in just three XFINITY oval starts. Gdovic and the PPM team ended the day as the second highest-finishing non Sprint Cup affiliated team and also bested three Sprint Cup affiliates.
After a seven-month hiatus from XFINITY racing, Yorktown, Virginia-native Gdovic spent practice day getting back into the groove of piloting an XFINITY Series car. Since he last competed in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, scoring a 13th-place finish at Watkins Glen International in 2015, Gdovic has raced a wide range of cars. He finished a record-setting debut Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series Season, securing the North American Amateur Championship and the Gallardo World Championship at the World Finals event at Sebring International Raceway. Gdovic’s success in all forms of motorsports caught the attention of the community and he joined the Performance Tech Motorsports’ driver lineup for the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona at the Daytona International Speedway to begin the 2016 season. He returned to Florida to coach NASCAR Whelen Euro Series drivers Anthony Kumpen and Ulysse Delsaux as they competed in the XFINITY and K&N Pro Series season openers, respectively. From there, Gdovic jumped behind the wheel of the No. 46 Verizon Camry for the inaugural K&N Pro Series East race at Mobile Speedway.
24-year-old Gdovic began race day at Bristol Motor Speedway by qualifying his way into the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300. His qualifying position lined him 17th in the XFINITY Series Dash for Cash Heat 1. Although he lost all radio communications with his spotter shortly after the start, Gdovic raced strategically throughout the 50-lap heat race, finishing 14th and securing himself a 27th-place starting position for the main event.
After the green flag flew, Gdovic began to advance steadily through the 40-car field. The first caution flag of the afternoon flew on Lap 40 and crew chief Mark Setzer instructed Gdovic to remain on track to retain his track position. The pit strategy proved advantageous and Gdovic was able to crack the top-20 by midrace. Under the Lap 127 caution, Gdovic brought his PITT OHIO Camaro down pit road for Precision Performance Motorsports’ only pit stop of the afternoon. He reported the car was a little tight in the center of the corners, so Setzer gave him a track bar adjustment, four fresh Goodyears and fuel. Gdovic returned to the track in the 20th position and spent the final laps of the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 earning two more positions and ended the race in the 18th position.
Brandon Gdovic Quote:
“I had a fun time at Bristol this weekend and gained a lot of valuable experience. Thanks to PITT OHIO and WindStax for the support this weekend and for coming out to enjoy the race. Thanks to all the guys at the shop for working hard all weekend and before the race weekend to bring this good looking piece to the track. I am glad we were able to bring home a good finish for the team and partners.”
